FGV’s Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (EPGE) organized, in partnership with the University of Bath (UK), the International Seminar on Higher Education called "Higher Education: Perspectives and International Experiences”. The event, held on September 17, addressed topics such as social impact, regulation, quality of higher education, demography, barriers and global ranking, among others.
The dean of EPGE, professor Rubens Penha Cysne, the professor at Bath, Ian Tonks, besides the deputy director of the National Association of Directors of Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Andifes), Anísio Brasileiro de Freitas Dourado, and FGV’s professor, Lindolpho de Carvalho Dias opened the seminar.
“This seminar is one more EPGE initiative to publicly discuss some issues that are very important, not only for the country or the state, but for the community, families and each one of us. Education is the most important public policy we know, since it promotes growth, rescues people from poverty, and reduces inequality”, said Professor Rubens.
The seminar also featured the participation of Marcelo Neri, from FGV’s Center for Social Policy (FGV Social). For the former minister of the Office for Strategic Affairs of the Presidency, the current scenario of fiscal restriction faced by Brazil requires an improvement in the educational policies evaluation system, so that the country may improve its programs and concentrate resources on more successful educational programs. The economist added that the lack of interest of young people indicates the absence of an effective monitoring system.
“A research conducted by FGV Social indicated that from the 62% who said they were not attending a higher technical education, 86.4% was due to a lack of interest, compared to only 5.4% who pointed out a lack of supply and 4.2% who pointed out financial constraints. The trend is the same for high school, technical or general education. This indicates that we are not being successful at attracting these people to the classrooms”, said Neri.
The seminar also included the participation of the director of CAPES, Marcio de Castro Silva Filho; the professors Rajani Naidoo, Margaret Greenwood and Jurgen Enders, from the University of Bath; Cecilia Machado, from EPGE; Raquel Guimarães, from UFPR; and the Member of the Technical Evaluation Board of INEP (National Institute for Educational Studies and Research), Renato Augusto Santos; and the CEO of Eleva Educação, Maria Eduarda Falcão. Sandoval Carneiro, Simon Schwartzman and Antonio Freitas, directors of Instituto Vale, IETS and FGV, respectively, were also present as the tables’ moderators.
